Kahe...Where have the sharks gone ?

Like many divers, we used to think the only 'attraction' at the Kahe dive site was the little ecosystem at the end of the pipes, where warm water from the power plant's cooling system is released into the cooler ocean water. That was until we explored the reefs more extensively, and found a number of small caves and caverns -- often occupied by one or more whitetip reef sharks. Today: none. While it's not the first time this has happened, it seems to be happening more often and more consistently lately. Shark populations worldwide have been on the decline for many years as a result of modern fishing practices and the deplorable shark-finning industry. Days like today are a reminder of that fact ... it is our hope that the sharks are still here, in an area less frequented by humans.
